Task 1- Radio advertising

Radio advertisement

The purpose of this report is to compare to adverts based on message and purpose, style, structure, use of music bed, voice over and persuasive techniques. The two adverts i will be comparing are the Tesco price drop advert and the Mr T snickers advert

                                                               Mr T snickers advert

Tesco price drop advert

Message and purpose

The  purpose of the 'Tesco price drop advert' is to tell and make people aware that the supermarket has loads of price drop offers and that costumers will save money if they shop at Tesco and it also lists all of the products they could save money on which might attract a certain audience, therefore its purpose is to encourage costumers to buy from Tesco, however the 'Mr T snickers advert' message is that in order to be a man you should be eating snickers, as the advert suggests that instead of the man using instructions to make something he should eat snickers and use his common sense, which might make other men feel obligated to buy snickers as its advertised as a manly thing, therefore the purpose of the advert is to encourage men to buy snickers.

Style and Use of music bed

The Tesco advert is a factual advert as it list all the products that would be featured in the price drop such as white bread, chicken soup and broccoli and also give specific information about it, yet at the same time its humorous because the male voice over which is a casual yet formal male voice over, continues to list all the items such as clotted cream and salmon at a fast pace even while the female voice over is talking, whereas the Mr T Snickers advert is more on the aggressive side as the male voice is shouting aggressively at the other person telling them they should be eating Snickers and being a man, this also makes the advert appeal more to men as aggressive tones/things are most associated with men.
Both adverts do not use any type of background music, i think this maybe to done so the audience can concentrate more on what is being said in the advert rather than the music.

                                                       Structure and level of distribution

The Tesco advert is a one off advert as it is not part of a series and is only advertising an offer that would only be available for a certain period of time, similarly the snickers advert is also an on off advert because it is not part of a series and is only advertising the snickers bar.
Another similarity between the adverts are their level of  distribution as both adverts are aired nationally and only for use in Britain.

Persuasive techniques

A Persuasive technique used in the snickers advert is celebrity endorsement as the voice of Mr T is used and also the unique selling point that is if you eat snickers it makes you more of a strong man, because Mr T is a person who is well known as being strong and having a lot of muscle, therefore more boys/men will feel the need to buy the product in order to feel/be like Mr T, the advert also uses the well known slogan "Get some Nuts" which might stick in a persons mind and might remind them to buy the product at future times as they will always associate that slogan with the product,  the Tesco advert tells us how the special offers will benefit the costumer and also uses the slogan "Every little helps" which is a well known slogan for Tesco, and is supposed to imply that Tesco does those little things that will help you, just like the snickers advert therefore it would stick in someones mind and they would associate with Tesco and cheaper prices every time they see or hear it.

Use of contact details and potential feedback for listeners

The Tesco advert does not contain any contact details or feedback for listeners unlike the Mr T advert which gives the website for the product for the audience to find out more about it although both adverts repeat the brand/product name multiple times empathizing on the brands and creating recognition for them.

  1. Anouska, this is a constructive analysis of the two radio adverts demonstrating understanding of the techniques used to target the audience. You are currently working towards pass standard for this piece of work. To improve, further explanation is needed outlining the target audience and techniques used to appeal to them. Further references are also needed to relevant terminology especially when discussing the voice-over.
