Task 1- Radio advertising

Radio advertisement

The purpose of this report is to compare to adverts based on message and purpose, style, structure, use of music bed, voice over and persuasive techniques. The two adverts i will be comparing are the Tesco price drop advert and the Mr T snickers advert

                                                               Mr T snickers advert

Tesco price drop advert

Message and purpose

The  purpose of the 'Tesco price drop advert' is to tell and make people aware that the supermarket has loads of price drop offers and that costumers will save money if they shop at Tesco and it also lists all of the products they could save money on which might attract a certain audience, therefore its purpose is to encourage costumers to buy from Tesco, however the 'Mr T snickers advert' message is that in order to be a man you should be eating snickers, as the advert suggests that instead of the man using instructions to make something he should eat snickers and use his common sense, which might make other men feel obligated to buy snickers as its advertised as a manly thing, therefore the purpose of the advert is to encourage men to buy snickers.

Style and Use of music bed

The Tesco advert is a factual advert as it list all the products that would be featured in the price drop such as white bread, chicken soup and broccoli and also give specific information about it, yet at the same time its humorous because the male voice over which is a casual yet formal male voice over, continues to list all the items such as clotted cream and salmon at a fast pace even while the female voice over is talking, whereas the Mr T Snickers advert is more on the aggressive side as the male voice is shouting aggressively at the other person telling them they should be eating Snickers and being a man, this also makes the advert appeal more to men as aggressive tones/things are most associated with men.
Both adverts do not use any type of background music, i think this maybe to done so the audience can concentrate more on what is being said in the advert rather than the music.

                                                       Structure and level of distribution

The Tesco advert is a one off advert as it is not part of a series and is only advertising an offer that would only be available for a certain period of time, similarly the snickers advert is also an on off advert because it is not part of a series and is only advertising the snickers bar.
Another similarity between the adverts are their level of  distribution as both adverts are aired nationally and only for use in Britain.

Persuasive techniques

A Persuasive technique used in the snickers advert is celebrity endorsement as the voice of Mr T is used and also the unique selling point that is if you eat snickers it makes you more of a strong man, because Mr T is a person who is well known as being strong and having a lot of muscle, therefore more boys/men will feel the need to buy the product in order to feel/be like Mr T, the advert also uses the well known slogan "Get some Nuts" which might stick in a persons mind and might remind them to buy the product at future times as they will always associate that slogan with the product,  the Tesco advert tells us how the special offers will benefit the costumer and also uses the slogan "Every little helps" which is a well known slogan for Tesco, and is supposed to imply that Tesco does those little things that will help you, just like the snickers advert therefore it would stick in someones mind and they would associate with Tesco and cheaper prices every time they see or hear it.

Use of contact details and potential feedback for listeners

The Tesco advert does not contain any contact details or feedback for listeners unlike the Mr T advert which gives the website for the product for the audience to find out more about it although both adverts repeat the brand/product name multiple times empathizing on the brands and creating recognition for them.

Task 2- MUSIC VIDEO CONVENTIONS, TECHNIQUES AND STYLES

A) briefly define the conventions of music video in your own words Briefly define the following conventions of music video in your words and the effect they may have on the audience.

Lyric interpretation- where the the lyrics of the song match or relate to what happens at that same time in the music video

Extending or consolidating song’s meaning- extending the songs meaning by showing something in the video that may imply the song has more than one meaning

Focus on performer- The music camera is mainly focused on the performer for the duration of the video

Lighting for mood - lighting reflects the mood trying to be portrayed in the video
-dark lighting shows a dull or sad mood
- bright lighting shows a happy mood

Pace of cuts - this is how long each shot is for, also shots can be cut to match a beat, faster cut shots give out a lively and happy mood whereas  slower cut shots give out a calmer mood to the video

Anouska and Wallace Radio advert

Task 1 - Report into music video purposes

Task 1 - Report into music video purposes
Anouska Mcpherson

                                                              Promotion of the artist album
(Chris Brown-Don't think they know)
The secondary purpose of this music video is to promote the album the single was taken from
(album x) for example in this video imagery from the album cover is used on the number plate of a car which could be subliminally influencing people to aknowledge the album and buy it, even if they may not notice it straight away it also hints the artist has something new and upcomming making the audience curious ofnwhat this 'X' is and they may do futher research into it therefore they would find out about the album and might buy it.

                                                       Promotion of a particular song
                                                               (J.cole -Power trip)

The primary purpose of this music video is to promote the single that has been released by this artist
as it is shown all over the internet via thinks such as youtube and vevo, which helped the artist achieve 180,050,111 views on the internet alone, and also has links to download the single and the album below the video, it is also shown on television on channels such as mtv to accompany the single and help boost the sales of the single.

Promotion of the artist them selves
(Miley cyrus - we cant stop)

The Music video is a great way to immediately draw an audience's attention the artist they have not seen before, it helps them to quickly see what type of artist they are and get an idea of their image, but for this video in particular i think the artist miley cyrus has used her music video to show a change in her musical direction and the way people perceive her as she's a former disney star from the show 'Hannah Montana' so she is seen as an innocent young girl, so in this video she trys to show the change in her image and personality by the costume she is wearing, as it is more revealling and kind of takes away her innocent look, also the way she's dancing is provacative and very sexualised implying that she's grown up mentally and physically.
In the video or in the video description there is nothing to promote the single, showing that miley might want the audience to focus on the video of this song so they realise it's all about her changing and growing up

Promotion of synergy with another media product

Another purpose of music video can to be to sell another media product at the same time, in the video above it is promoting the speakers 'Beats pill' shown in the first few seconds of the video so they're the first thing the audience notice, also the fact that this is quite a popular artist and she is using this product my encourage people to want to buy this product as well, another product shown in the video is the EOS Lip-balm.

Increased income for the record label
(Jay-z - empire state of mind)

From a record labels point of view the main purpose of all singles, music video's and albums is to make money for them and the artist they have signed.
Jay-z is the owner of the record label 'roc nation' and also produces in own music, therefore what ever money he made from this song or any music he makes goes straight to him so he makes alot more of a profit.

Increasing the range of media an artist is active in
( Ciara ft Chamilionaire- Get up)

A music video can increase an artists popularity and also their audience range in different media forms  for example through youtube,Tv and dvd's.

I am using this video as an example because the song is one of the lead singles from the sound track for the film Step up, which was/is quite a popular film therefore having the song featured in the soundtrack might extend your audience because people who may not listen to that artist or particular type of music would hear the song and would like it, and do further research into the artist and start listening to their music, which gives the artist more of an audience

Music video workshop 1

Shot 1

For this shot an extreme close up was used to show the facial expression while the person was talking on the phone to show the persons facial expression, giving the audience an idea on the emotion trying to be portrayed in this particular scene

Shot 2

For shot 2 our group thought the most appropriate shot type to use was a close up as the characters were in the mirror therefore we had to get there faces and facial expressions in the shot, along with their shoulders so you could see the type of movement they were making, so it gave the audience a clear idea of what was happening and also matched the lyrics in the chosen song.

Shot 3

For shot 3 a medium shot was used to show the person was sitting down, the shot was also quite wide as the character was alone, so it empathised on the fact they were alone, a few seconds into the shot it is zoomed out to a full shot to alert the audience that another character was entering the scene and you can see the character walking into the shot, it then zooms back into a medium shot to show the two characters sitting and talking.

Duke Dumont - Need U (100%)

The video was made to promote the song it's self as a single and also increase the sales therefore the  record label and the artist themselves would make more of a profit, Also the video promotes the artist them selves and creates awareness about them, it also gives an insight on what the artist is like and the type of things they produce.

The video also gives a second meaning to the song, as without watching the video you might think the song is about a person with the lyrics "need you 100%" , but when you actually watch the video you may come to realise the artist is actually talking about music, because in the video when the music is coming out of the man everyone becomes happy and begins to dance, but as soon as it is turnt off everyone goes back to normal or seems sad.
